Perhaps you may have heard the acronym, CSAT, come up in 12-step rooms or by other professionals you may have met before, or the acronym and name might be completely new to you. A Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT for short) is a professional that has undergone extensive training and supervision to help treat individuals with compulsive sexual behaviour.

Founded by renowned therapist Dr. Patrick Carnes, the CSAT® (Certified Sex Addiction Therapist) program was developed after years of extensive experience in the field of addiction. CSAT therapists are trained to identify, assess, and treat individuals struggling with compulsive sexual behaviour. Using both a person-centered and unique 30-task model approach, among other modalities, CSAT therapists integrate their training and knowledge to help support individuals who have sex/porn addiction.

The CSAT training process is comprehensive and includes 4 35-hour training modules over 2 years, with topics ranging from sex addiction treatment, partner betrayal trauma, cross addiction, trauma, arousal, and neurobiology - to name a few. Additionally, each CSAT therapist is required to have 30 hours of CSAT supervision with a qualified and experienced CSAT supervisor, allowing therapists to gain knowledge and support on client cases to help develop better tools and resources to help clients.

CSAT Therapists are also trained to deliver and assess the Sex Addiction Screening Test, Sexual Dependency Inventory, Sexual Digital Media Inventory, and the Post-Traumatic Stress Index - among others. Each test allows the therapist to gain useful information and data to help the client better understand themselves, their behaviour, and other relevant information such as attachment style to use within a treatment plan. CSAT's do not diagnose compulsive sexual behaviour, however, the assessments help act as a tool to better understand whether one's behaviour is addictive/compulsive.

A qualified CSAT can also help to determine how to best treat porn addiction, as the treatment model may vary depending on the issue, frequency, and severity. Often, individuals with an addiction to pornography have been exposed to porn at a very early age, and have developed a tolerance to excessive use and difficulties in stopping or withdrawing. CSAT therapists can help to create a treatment plan aimed at achieving certain goals from the use, whether total abstinence is desired or perhaps better boundaries around the use of such behaviours.

Adam Gelinas is currently completing his CSAT module training with IITAP and is a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist - Candidate and Omar Waheed is a full Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT). Omar is currently accepting new clients looking for assistance in these areas.
