Low Self-Esteem & Self-Worth Therapy

Men who experience or identify with low self-worth and poor self-esteem often struggle with:

  • getting their needs met or meeting their own needs

  • people-pleasing/appeasing others at cost of self

  • building healthy, intimate relationships (romantic/social)

  • seeing themselves as worthy of love, connection, and belonging

  • negative self-talk

  • self-doubt

  • difficulty expressing emotions and feelings

  • poor self-control

  • comparisons, often unrealistic, with others

  • poor personal boundaries (rigid/disengaged)

  • inability to receive feedback, even positive feedback

There are many potential sources or roots for low self-worth and poor self-esteem including:

  • Childhood trauma and dysfunctional family systems 

  • Pressure from family, friends, and society

  • Internalized shame of not feeling worthy or good enough

  • Divorce or relationship break-ups

  • Adverse experiences such as bulling or harassment

  • Pressure from parents or other family members as children

  • Certain mental health issues

Working with a therapist can help you better understand the roots of low self-worth and poor self-esteem. Therapy can help one to develop better tools, awareness, and resources aimed at developing and cultivating a healthier sense of self and self-esteem. Often, men develop unhealthy coping skills or cognitive biases that can also be better understood and addressed within therapy. Work may also be done to improve one's self care, boundaries, coping skills, emotional regulation, and shame.
