Practicum Opportunity - September 2023 

About Us: First Step Men’s Therapy is a 100% virtual men’s mental health practice that offers individual and group therapy to clients across Ontario. Using our secure telehealth platform via JaneApp, we help support men to develop better relationships and connection with themselves and others.

Our specializations: addiction, trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, sexuality, intimacy and relationships, anger, substance misuse, and self-esteem/self-worth.


What we offer:

  • The ability to utilize and learn the therapeutic modalities that you are interested in, while maintaining client-centred care

  • Access to a growing and extensive resource bank full of books, worksheets, and manuals

  • Flexibility around hours/days to ensure appropriate work/life balance

  • A caseload of approximately 7-9 clients per week (average)

  • Access to a secure, easy to use online booking and filing system

  • Administrative support

  • Group Supervision (1 x per month) with colleagues

  • A collaborative team environment

  • Honorarium each term to offset the cost of external supervision


Our ideal intern:


  • Mature candidates with at least 2 years of experience working or volunteering in mental health or related field are preferred

  • Willing and able to provide more than the minimum requirements for their degree to contribute to the team and help support our busy practice

  • Will ask for help when they need it, and are passionate about learning

  • Have a thorough knowledge of, and abide by, all the ethical standards and guidelines as per the CRPO/Yorkville University

  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Interest in working on blogs and posts for our website/social media pages

  • Comfortable with working on their practicum within a completely virtual setting

  • Are client-centred, and tailor their approaches to meet the needs of their clients

  • Candidates should have experience as a client in the therapeutic process and ideally are engaged in working on themselves within a therapeutic relationship.

Bonus if you:

  • Currently in the process of attaining their Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) designation with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)

  • Have or are working towards a certification/training in a particular population/presenting issue or modality (i.e., sex therapy or DBT)

  • Engaged in or prior experience in a personal therapeutic relationship as a client

  • Previous work or volunteer experience within a mental health setting

  • Member of the BIPOC community or marginalized population
